"About
Monday May 13th. I'll never forget that day. We were originally going
to an area where we found some booby traps the day before. I remember
walking in a rice paddy and getting word that we are going to support,
I think, the 2nd/3rd battalion. They were in heavy contact with the
enemy.
I
remember going thru the village and there didn't seem to be too many
people out that day. The river boats came and we were loading on. As it
was filling up they didn't have enough room, and they held us up for
the next boat. But they found some more room and squeezed us on.
As
the boats were going down river we were ambushed, really heavy, the
bullets on the sides of the boat sounded like rain hittihg a roof.
The
boat captain(a gook) turned the boat around in the middle of it -
seemed stupid to me. He started going back and then turned it around
again and continued on.
We
were hit hard. I remember someone calling for a grenadier (m-79) and I
squeezed over and saw a vc in the doorway of a hooch. I shot him, and
just as that happened an E-5, I think his name was Johnson, somehow got
down into the boat, apparently they were up top. He was going crazy
screaming, a bullet hit a Law (anti tank rocket) and blew some one up
really bad.
I
also remember one of the arvns running the boat come down, he was shot
in the back. I remember the bullet hole, but he was still standing..." . |

| "We got
off the boats and started walking, There was a dead VC there that they
tried to cover up. We walked up and you could hear the firing. We were
behind a dike, then we got the orders to go into the wood line, there
were three of us on point. Harry Errett was to the left, I was in the
center and Albert Brown was on the right. As we walked toward the wood
line Albert called to me and said, 'Watch out, something doesn't look
right in front of you.' He was looking at it from an angle, I remember
stopping and looking around, all of a sudden a shot rang out, I could
hear it go over my head, I looked at Albert and he looked at me, After
a couple of seconds it hit home, that they were shooting at us, I
remember jumping onthe ground as fast as I could, but at first I
couldn't believe it..." |

| "We
crawled to a dike in front of us and fired back and forth for a couple
of hours (I think) Harry Errett got hit in the backside with grenade
shrapnel. In back of us was Sgt Lynch. He got shot in the foot, a Medic
came up, I think his name was Doc Proctor. He came running and crawling
up, I thought he was nuts. He wound up getting hit in the back with
shrapnel. After a while, seemed forever to me, we started to crawl out.
Albert brown helped the wounded and I carried their weapons, I remember
coming to a dike. Our guys were on the other side but the firing from
the VC at us was so intense couldn't jump over it (the dike). Bullets
were hitting the mud all around us. Finally Sgt. Ski yelled for me to
get ready to come over, I looked up at the top of the dike, and two
machine guns were plopped down, I think Jody Werreliein was on of them,
they started firing and Sgt Ski yelled 'Come on...'" |
