"Ole
Bob says, 'Hoeky, you know where those bunkers are, so you and Ken just
take the lead with your squads in close behind you.' Boy, what a great
idea. I was scared shitless. Anyway, off we go again, but not as
separated as before. We hit the treeline on the run with Kenny off to
my left. Man, oh man. Turned out that the bunkers were laid out in 3
rings, one inside the other for protection from attack. After
successfully neutralizing one or two, we kinda drove forward like a
wedge, taking out more bunkers as we moved. Marple was beside me and
Olson and Lindley were off to my left. We were running into bunkers and
NVA popping up all around for shots at us. We could hear a lot of
firing and explosions from Kenny’s direction, but we had our hands
pretty full in our own area. Denver Marple earned the Silver Star that
day while we fought our way into that nightmare of a bunker complex. I
know that he saved my bacon more than once as we worked together to get
past the bunkers..." |

| "Everything
was happening lightening fast and lots of gory stuff came out of our
weapons. NVA grenades were being tossed our way along with the AK fire.
Our little group took out many of them, but we finally heard someone
yell that it was time to pull back since it was starting to get dark.
Just before leaving the treeline, there was concern about Kenny and
Lynch. Someone managed to get Lindley, but Kenny had been killed and
his body was in a position that was still controlled by the gooks. No
one wanted to leave him overnight, but he was dead for sure and there
was no way to get him out..." |

| "We
were ordered to pull back to the sunken area from which we had watched
the airstrikes earlier. The sky was full of Hueys off to the left and
right bringing more units and resupply. We were to be part of a huge
perimeter surrounding the wooded area, which at one time was an old
French plantation of some sort. Some of us up front had gotten a
glimpse of the big, old colonial house in the center of the trees.
Well, we had them little f***ers surrounded for the night and the plan
was to go back in the morning and mop up the few remaining NVA. (An
estimate had been passed around that there had probably been up to
around 75 gooks dug in around that treeline..." |
