Night Attack... |
|
|
|
| "We
set up for the night in a large hole, or trench in the rice paddy. It
was several feet deep. Later that evening, I was sent out on LP toward
the NVA position with a couple other guys. It was a rainy night, and we
took refuge under a large hay stack which was located in the rice paddy
between the company perimeter and the Nippa Palm where the NVA was
located. We
were out there for a while without anything happening. Eventually,
though, the enemy began to probe our company perimeter with automatic
weapons fire. Our company returned fire, and almost instantly a barrage
of red tracers was flying back and forth through the dark, stormy night
sky, and we found ourselves caught in a crossfire..." |

The VC probe our perimeter. Our LP is caught in a crossfire...

| "The
guys who were with me decided to run back to the perimeter, and they
made it there safely from what I recall. Not knowing exactly what to
do, I stayed out there for a moment. I hated to stay there in a
crossfire, but on the other hand, I didn't want to get cut down while
running back to the perimeter. I still had the radio with me, so I
called for instructions and was told to hurry back to the perimeter and
that they would either hold their fire or move it away from my
position.
So
with tracers still flying, and the rain pouring down I ran as fast as I
could back to the perimeter. As I did, I could hear someone shout that
I was coming back in and to either hold their fire or move it, I don't
recall for sure which.
I dove head-first into the trench, which by now was filling with water..." |
