Night Attack (Cont'd) |
|
Robert Smith continues...
|
| "Upon
diving into the trench, some of my ammo clips fell out and my M16 got
muddy. But I righted myself immediately and began firing at the
now-advancing enemy soldiers. It was raining very hard now, and it was
dark. If I remember correctly, because of the stormy weather we lost
all air support except for artillery. However, once the night sky was
illuminated with artillery, it was a scary sight for me to see the
shadowy enemy figures advancing on our entrenched position. It seemed
to me that the enemy was bringing the fight to us and attempting to
overrun our position. I honestly felt like this was where I was going
to die..." |

The enemy was bringing the fight to us...

| "In
the stormy dim light I could faintly see some of the enemy soldiers
falling to the ground from our firepower. Yet, they continued advancing
on us, and got so close that we started throwing hand grenades at them.
I remember everything was so wet and muddy that it was difficult to get
a grip on the grenades, and our M16 rifles were all muddy and some were
even getting jammed.
Eventually, we repelled the enemy, and in the illuminated night we could see some of them dragging their dead back with them..." |

Finally, we repelled the enemy...

| "Later
that morning at first light we walked through the wooded area and I saw
lots of dead enemy soldiers. I had never seen that many dead people
before and it was a very sobering feeling. I believe the approximate
enemy body count was about 80..." |
