"I
was in C-2-3 mortar platoon located at Fire Base Hun just north of Binh
Dinh Bridge on May 13-14. It was a small two company base camp
(A&C) but everyone else was out on various ambushes except for our
mortar platoon, HQ group, a few new guys from our company, and 5-6 guys
from Alpha company. We were hit about midnight by a large force of NVA
leaving Saigon. From what I've been able to find out, the assault on
our position was a diversion to allow other NVA troops to escape.
We
suffered heavy casualties and killed approximately 200 NVA. A portion
of our perimeter was over-run and a corner bunker was captured with the
machine gun turned back on us. We knocked out the bunker by firing our
mortar straight up but the fight continued with some close combat until
daylight when we got support from D-Troop 17th Cav. We had Cobra and
Spooky support during the night. Our CO was KIA along with others..."

was a helluva night. I don't know where you were, but imagine it was
part of the same action. Unfortunately, the Redcatcher news summary
reports it as minor activity when I believe it was one of the major
engagements of the 199th considering the number of units involved..." |
