"Late in the evening before the firefight, our recon platoon ran into an enemy base camp and got pinned down. We pulled all the troops off the perimeter of our base camp that night and sent them out to help, but they could not reach them. Headquarters personnel, me included, manned the bunkers until morning.

Early in the morning we mobilized 3 companies of infantry, 2 attack forces and 1 blocking force. The battalion executive officer (a Major) was in the field calling in air strikes and artillery. The air strikes were coming from Ton Son Nuht Air Base, and the artillery was coming from 8 or 16 inch guns off shore (Navy); 2 batteries of 8 inch guns nearby; 3 or 4 batteries of 105mm howitzers, 2 of those at our base camp; and numerous 4 deuce mortars in the field.

Our company was to attack from one flank by going through a village and getting on river boats piloted by South Vietnamese..."
