The Recon Platoon

Monday morning, 13 May, 1968 - In the dark, early morning hours, the small recon platoon from Company E, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry, 199th Light Infantry Brigade makes contact with a large enemy force in a remote rice paddy southwest of Saigon. Vastly outnumbered, the platoon remains pinned down that morning...

Surrounded by Viet Cong on at least two sides, Cobra Gunships (LFT) are called in to assault the enemy...

Later that morning, and still pinned down, they now have casualties - including their platoon leader...

Bad news comes in - Recon Platoon Sergeant Sandberg has now died from his wounds and is listed as KIA...

The recon platoon is pinned down in a rice paddy southwest of Saigon near coordinates XS723835

Dedicated to those who died that day
